Dan-Paul Flores

From an early age, Dan-Paul Flores was fascinated by the visual. He was so captivated by colour and aesthetics, that it comes as little surprise that his early ambition was to become a special effect make-up artist.

Living in Norfolk, he broke into the beauty industry through hairdressing.  After completing his apprenticeship, Dan trained with Vidal Sassoon and was then asked to be Art Director of the salon at Army and Navy in Guildford. It was here he first started to work with make-up, preparing models for fashion shows and events.

Dan was then head hunted by John Carne, the Guilford-based, nationally known, hair salon that was to give him his first taste of celebrity. Whilst working with a variety of high profile clients, he established firm friendships with the likes of Jill Tavelman Collins and her then husband, Phil Collins that were set to last for many years.

At the same time, Dan established himself as an industry authority by working in the professional seminars of L’Oreal and overseeing artistic direction on an array of fashion photo shoots.

Next stop was Liverpool where Dan worked for Andrew and Liz Collinge, managing their prestigious salon while the couple themselves built up a media profile with regular appearances on shows such as ‘This Morning’. Dan was not only strengthening his clientele, but was able to closely observe the inner workings of the media.

After working for individuals such as Alan Paul and Patrick Cameron at events that included shows at the Royal College of Fashion, Dan took the opportunity for a change of scene and worked as a private image consultant in the south of France.

‘The opportunity to work abroad came at the right time for me,’ he says. ‘The fashion and beauty industries can be very full on and I needed to experience a life outside it.’

It took only six months for Dan to be seduced back to the UK when he was asked by John Carne to return as Art Director of the L’Oreal fashion shows. ‘I loved the job because it was very creative, whilst also educating other professionals.’

Dan went on to work with the likes of Nicky Clarke, Paul Merrit and was, along with his associate Paul Scully, the first choice for Channel 4’s reality television series ‘The Salon’.  ‘Originally I thought the project would be a showcase for the hair and beauty industry, but as the idea progressed it became clear that I was expected to provide access to my client base, get them on the show and encourage them to talk about their private lives.  I became increasingly uncomfortable with the show’s agenda and since I didn’t need the publicity, I decided to bow out.’ The role would later be given to Paul Merrit.

Dan not only become a regular face backstage at events such as the British Music Awards, MOBOs and international fashion shows, but had built up an impressive celebrity clientele. From Julie Walters to Jim and Tracey Davison, Will and Lisa Carling, Angie Rutherford and Jill and Lily Collins. Dan continued to work as a freelance stylist for 12 years, visiting their homes and spending a great deal of time with them

‘I love working with people on such a personal level.  Over time you build up trust and I was often asked to work with entire families, helping to introduce clients’ daughters into hair and make-up techniques.’

In 2005, Dan took an extended break from private consultancy to pursue his passion for painting and art. ‘At this point in my life, I am having an absolute love affair with colour - I love exploring it as a means of expression and communication.’

It is this passion for colour that brought Dan back to the limelight for one special project - to be the UK and European spokesperson for Wet ‘n’ Wild.   Wet n Wild is one of the Top 5 selling cosmetic brands in the USA with 25,000 retail outlets selling over 100 million pieces a year. It has a celebrity following of Hollywood talent such as Claire Danes, Rachel Bilson  and Angela Basset and music icons such as Avril Lavigne, Ashlee Simpson, and Britney Spears.

‘The one thing I have learnt from my career in hair and beauty is that it is all about giving confidence.  Colour can be used to any effect, whether it be simple, striking or sexy.  What attracted me to Wet ‘n’ Wild was that as well as being bright and funky, it has something for every age group. Having worked with many generations, often of the same family, I don’t believe that cosmetics should be age-specific - people of all ages want to have fun with their appearance and style.’

‘I also wanted to promote Wet ‘n’ Wild due to its price.  I know the ingredients contained in this make up are the best, but most of these items cost less than a couple of quid! Making the brand so affordable allows anyone to experiment and play with their style using the best quality cosmetics.’

‘Finally, as I am half-Hawaiian, I was impressed by a brand committed to creating a product with multi-ethnicity, whilst making fashion fun, affordable and above all, REAL!  The celebrities I work with have the same worries and concerns about their appearance as anyone else. I have used Wet ‘n’ Wild on my friends and they love it. I would not hesitate to recommend it to a top end, celebrity clientele because fashion should not be about how expensive a product is or which celebrity endorses it, but quality. When I used Wet ‘n’ Wild I had to ask myself ‘why would anyone pay more’?’

Dan, who until now has always preferred to stay out of the limelight, (passing up the opportunity to star in Channel 4’s reality series ‘The Salon’) has come forward to endorse Wet ‘n’ Wild because he believes it is the first range to successfully combine the three characteristics fundamental to high street fashion: colour, quality and cost.

‘I have a long standing love affair with colour,’ he explains. ‘It can be used to create any look, whether it is simple, striking or sexy and I knew of Wet ‘n’ Wild from its popularity in the States. It’s bright, funky and has something for every age group. Having worked with many generations, often of the same family, I don’t believe that cosmetics should be age-specific - people of all ages want to have fun with their appearance and style.’
